August is around the corner, and while that means many things to many people, it means many families are looking for school supplies. Last year, we supplied 127 students from 25 different schools with supplies, a 20% increase from the previous year.
In addition to having free school supplies (while supplies last) for those who need them, we will once again have free on-site haircuts, child ID cards, and festival staples such as snow cones, popcorn, and games. And new for this year, we plan to expand with a couple new, exciting activities, including:
Although we were able to help more students last year, not all of those we served received what they needed to start the year off on solid ground. This year, in an effort to adequately equip as many students as possible, we are changing how we are gathering supplies to see if we can get the right amount for everyone. After looking at this year’s supply lists for schools, we are asking people to provide supplies for backpacks in groups of supplies rather than individual components as in past years. Below are proposed groupings. Please note that we are not requesting that backpacks be included—supplies only.
If you would like to provide materials for a backpack but are unable to purchase these items yourself, we invite you to consider a monetary donation of either $5 (for a Kindergarten backpack) or $10 (for a 1st-6th grade backpack); these donations will be used to purchase supplies to fill a backpack. We will also welcome donations of new and gently-used books to be given out at the Back to School event.
Because this event is designed to help NBUMC reach out into the community, we need everyone’s help. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Terese Loudner (email@example.com) or Vicki Nichols (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call the church office at 614-268-8626.
